Bluewater Sailboat – Lagoon 42-2


Because it appeals to many consumers, the Bluewater sailboat Lagoon 42-2 is the most popular boat in the French yard. It’s spacious enough for a couple to live onboard extremely comfortably without seeming overwhelming. The Bluewater sailboat Lagoon 42-2’s swooping lines were created by exterior designer Patrick Le Quement in collaboration with the naval designers of France’s VPLP Design, known for their racing hulls. The circular coachroof forms a compound curve all the way around the cabinhouse, the composite bimini angles up to provide the idea of suspension, the composite bimini angles up to reduce heat inside, and the underside of the gullwing bridgedeck was designed to minimise pounding in rough waves. Indeed, there are lots of curves.

Due to the injected, injection-molded design, which results in an overall lightship weight of just over 26,000lb, the boat has also become smaller.

The forestay fitting, a Code 0 sprit, the anchor roller, and an anchor chain well that runs above the beam rather than below it are all secured by a structural centre beam, which increases strength.

The VMG Soromap mast has been set forward to open up the foretriangle and provide additional options for downwind sails, just like the 42’s sisters, the 39 and 52. Moreover, it maintains weight balance to lessen pitching. The compression post can be used as a handhold because it is located in the saloon’s middle. An effective high-aspect-ratio sailplan is produced by the shorter boom and the taller mast. Above Deck

That’s sleek, but so is its curving, two-foot fibreglass edge that has a smooth finish but no antiskid. It’s difficult to climb up into the high cabinhouse from the foredeck, especially with wet hands and feet, and the surface will be slippery for anyone at the top.

Below Deck

The arrangement of Lagoon 42-2 is very advantageous. You will appreciate the roomy U-shaped galley in this opulent catamaran, which is well furnished with a three-burner Eno stove and a top-loading fridge. The living area, which features an L-shaped couch where you may sit to operate the outboard-facing nav station, is open to the galley. A second set of instruments are included in the nav station so you can also keep an eye on happenings at the helm from inside. Also, the saloon offers a good table with seating for 7-8 people.

The internal living area of this Bluewater sailboat is roomy and cosy, like many high-end catamarans. The Lagoon 42-2 is available with 3 or 4 cabins. The spectacular master suite on the three-cabin Lagoon 42 configuration spans the whole starboard hull. For optimal comfort and privacy, each cabin has its own head. The staterooms’ generous headroom, at little over two metres, is another plus.

The Lagoon 42-2 has a fantastic layout in addition to being bright and well ventilated thanks to its five portholes along the cabin ceiling, wraparound cabin windows, and tri-fold deck doors. Lagoon’s fine woodworking provides a lovely and sophisticated finish.

The L-shaped settee runs amidships and is fairly comfortable for serious ship work. It also doubles as a seat for the nav station that faces outboard. When the autopilot is driving up top, a second set of B&G instruments at this location enables for a rapid position check. The saloon is roomy and would accommodate traffic well, but an overhead hatch would be useful as the only ventilation is provided by two forward-opening windows.


VPLP did a fantastic job with the Bluewater sailboat 42-2’s sailing characteristics despite her weight. She moves nicely on a beam or a large reach and accelerates quickly in gusts. You should sail at 5 to 7 knots in a light breeze and 8 to 9 knots in a Force 4 or moderate breeze. You should register speeds in the low teens while sailing downwind with the gennaker up. The 42-2 will not match a monohull or a daggerboard cat, but that is true of any cruising cat with fixed keels, according to She Sails Upwind. She will ultimately be able to move you off a lee shore. To maintain speed at about 7 knots in a breeze and maximize your VMG, it is preferable to point at about 60 degrees to true (Velocity Made Good).

Attempting to squeeze the 42-2 closer—say, to 50 (35–40 apparent)—will cause the speed to decrease and cause you to begin to swerve. The list of extras should continue with folding props following the square top mainsail. They ought to purchase you a second knot. You’ll have your work cut out for you when the wind dies, though. The 42 is slow in anything less than 10 knots unless you have greater space to fly in front of the mast. You can maintain motion by using a gennaker for downwind operations and a Code 0 for angles closer to the wind. You can always turn on the leeward engine upwind to get you where you need to go right away if they didn’t make the budget reduction. And if the budget cuts were made, it might be time to order that parasailor for the downwind work.

The 42-2 is a forgiving boat and is well-suited for short-handed sailing because all the lines come back to the helm. The self-tacking jib makes things simple, but because of the stepped back mast on these boats, the mainsail’s centre of effort is farther aft than it is on other cats. This will usually cause the boat to turn into the wind, so you must pay attention to the weather helm and balance the sail plan.

Lagoon has, in general, taken what it has learned from earlier models and applied it to the 42. Because they have so much information, this French builder stands apart in that regard. Only Leopard and Fountaine Pajot come close. The Lagoon 420, the predecessor model, had a lengthy bridgedeck and modest nets. We used a small, asymmetric spinnaker at 60 degrees true to cruise at 7 knots in a 9 mph wind on the journey from Guadeloupe to Antigua. So, it’s crucial to have the proper sail plan if you want to move the boat in light winds.

The L42 is one of the production catamarans in this size range that is among the quickest overall. Although it won’t fly at 16 knots like in the promotional movies, with the appropriate sail plan you can comfortably outperform the majority of similar-sized cats and monohulls, and the boat will take you through passages quickly and comfortably.
