  • Description: LBI provides full circle development from design, prototype development, testing, and the manufacturing of finished products. LBI strives to create robust and reliable autonomous systems for the harsh marine environment. their mission is to provide this service and production capability to their Department of Defense, NOAA, and commercial customers. they apply their unique knowledge of materials, composites, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems to emerging technologies. LBI has leading edge experience in Carbon Fiber Composite Structures, balancing the need for high strength to weight ratios with cost, to deliver the best value to their customers. We are committed to applying their 49 years of naval architecture and marine experience in the development of successful marine systems from surface craft to Arctic buoys, Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV), Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and Underwater Gliders. This expertise includes Design, Structural Analysis (FEA), and Fabrication of Steel, Aluminum and Stainless Steel structures from sheet metal to 43,000 lb. Deep Draft Camel Separators to moor Nuclear Submarines. Their Mantra is “Be Nimble Be Quick”. Time is of the essence, so they believe in “Drilling Down on the Solution” as quickly as possible. The goal is to deliver cost effective solutions and value to their customers. Peter Legnos founded LBI in May 1971. LBI is a research, development, engineering and manufacturing company specializing in marine and naval systems. In the beginning, Legnos designed, manufactured and marketed over 300 sailboats and commercial power boats in the early years until 1986. The Legnos boat designs are known as the “Mystic Cat”, “Mystic 30”, “Mystic Ali Cat 20”, “Mystic River Cat 15” sailboats, and the “Legnos 35” a commercial powerboat. As an innovative and knowledgeable boat designer and builder for over 14 years Legnos grew LBI in a new direction in the late 80’s that continues till today of specialized work successfully developing and manufacturing projects for their U.S. Government National Defense. Electric Boat and LBI collaboration began in the late 1970’s. Legnos and the LBI team worked on many components for the Trident mock-up. They designed and developed tooling and consulted on procedures and methods for the application of the Special-Hull-Treatment (SHT) for the Mold-In-Place (MIP) program for the Seawolf and Virginia Class Submarines. Legnos was Program Manager and Principal Investigator on many research and development projects funded through Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grants for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and ONR (Office of Naval Research). He, along with the LBI team, developed innovative systems for NOAA, ONR, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Spawar Systems Center Pacific, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Combatant Craft Division, NSWC Carderock Philadelphia, NUWC Newport, General Dynamics and Hamilton Standard.
